In 2015, Ford unveiled a stunning surprise at the Detroit Auto Show, the 2015 Ford GT, developed in complete secrecy. This marked Ford’s ambitious declaration to create a world-class supercar and compete at Le Mans, exactly 50 years after their historic GT40 victory.Breaking from tradition, the new GT featured a state-of-the-art 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V-6 engine with a staggering 647 horsepower, paired with a seven-speed Getrag dual-clutch transmission. Its performance was truly exceptional, going from 0 to 60 mph in just 3 seconds and reaching a remarkable top speed of 216 mph. The adaptive suspension allowed for a two-inch drop in ride height, and the self-adjusting rear spoiler optimized aerodynamics. To manage its power, the GT was equipped with Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes featuring six-piston calipers and massive 15.5-inch rotors upfront. Hydraulic power steering provided immediate and precise feedback to the driver.
The 2015 Ford GT wasn’t just a powerhouse; it was a masterpiece in design. Prioritizing low weight and aerodynamic efficiency, the car featured futuristic bodywork with distinctive flying buttresses. These weren’t just for show; they ingeniously directed airflow to vital mechanical components while enhancing downforce.
To maintain exclusivity, Ford established a rigorous application process for prospective buyers. These fortunate few had to be devoted Ford enthusiasts committed to keeping their GTs for an extended period. The response was overwhelming, with applications outnumbering available chassis allotments by nearly tenfold at the model’s official launch. With only 1,350 units slated for production through the 2022 model year, the 2015 Ford GTs are far scarcer than their 2005-2006 predecessors, of which nearly 4,000 were built.
The 2015 Ford GT will forever be etched in automotive history. Its bold and secretive development, exceptional performance, futuristic design, and remarkable exclusivity make it a standout in the world of supercars. Ford’s decision to revisit their Le Mans glory 50 years later was more than a marketing stunt; it was a testament to their engineering prowess and commitment to pushing the boundaries of automotive excellence. The 2015 Ford GT remains an iconic symbol of innovation, power, and exclusivity in the realm of high-performance sports cars.
